Is Your Propane Tank Out of Date?

A propane tank is good for 12 years from the date it was made. After that it can't legally be refilled until it's recertified, and recertification buys another five years at a time.

The date is stamped into the collar, the metal ring around the valve. It reads as a month and year, sometimes with a letter after it. If the stamp says anything before 2014, the tank is due.

This is a spring problem down here. A tank that sat under the trailer through a Cape May County winter looks exactly the same at twelve years as it did at eleven, and the first fill-up of the season is usually when anyone finds out. If you're opening up at Ocean View Resort, Sea Isle or anywhere along the shore, it's worth checking the collar before you need the grill.

We don't recertify tanks. If yours is too old to fill, we'll dispose of the old one for you and you can buy a replacement from us on the spot.

What Does a Propane Refill Cost?

Propane is sold by the gallon, so what you pay depends on how much room is left in the tank. You only pay for what goes in, which is why topping off a half-empty tank costs about half as much as filling an empty one.

The 20, 30 and 40 pound tanks are the ones we see most.

What Size Tanks We Fill

We fill portable tanks from a 1/4 gallon up to 40 pounds. The 20, 30 and 40 pound sizes cover most grills, fire pits and trailer setups.

We can't fill tanks that are built into a motorhome. Those have to go somewhere set up for onboard tanks. If your tank comes off the trailer and you can carry it, we can fill it.

Propane Tank Exchange vs. Refill

Swapping gets you a tank somebody else filled. Refilling fills the one you brought. The difference that matters is how much gas you drive away with.

Does Lowe's, Tractor Supply, or Ace Refill Propane Tanks?

Most big-box hardware stores run a swap cage out front rather than a refill pump. You trade your tank in for a pre-filled one rather than getting your own back. Some chains do have refill stations at certain locations, but it varies store to store, so it's worth a phone call before you drive over.

Propane for Seasonal Campers at Ocean View Resort

If you're seasonal at Ocean View Resort, we're right on the property, so tanks don't need a separate trip off site.

The campground runs its own refill station twice a day in season. They'll check whether your tank is in date, but they don't sell tanks. We do both. Refill or replacement, right away, no appointment, any time we're open.

Two points in the season are worth planning around. The first is opening, when tanks that sat all winter turn out to be low or out of date. The second is closing. If you're having the unit winterized, filling the tanks before you shut down means it's ready to run next spring without an errand on your first trip back. The camping season runs from mid April through mid October.
