Should You Repair or Replace an RV Water Heater?

If the tank itself is leaking, the water heater usually needs to be replaced. Other problems, like a heater that won't light or won't heat on electric, can often be fixed by replacing a single part.

A burned-out heating element stops the heater from working on electric while gas still works. On gas, a heater that won't light is often a worn igniter or a faulty thermostat. A drain plug that drips can look like a leaking tank at first glance, so check where the water is coming from before deciding.

We sell water heater parts over the counter, including heating elements, igniters and anode rods. If you're doing the work yourself, bring the heater's model information with you and we'll match the part.

Does Your Water Heater Have an Anode Rod?

RV water heaters with a steel tank have an anode rod, and water heaters with an aluminum tank don't. The rod corrodes instead of the tank.

If your heater has one, check the rod each season when the tank is drained, and replace it when much of the metal has worn away. If you're not sure which type of heater you have, a photo of its label will tell us, and we'll help you find the right rod.

Air Conditioner Shrouds and Roof Vents

The shroud is the plastic cover over your rooftop air conditioner. Roof vents and vent lids sit up there too, in the same sun. Years of direct sun make plastic brittle, and it eventually cracks.

A cracked vent lid can let rain inside, so it's worth replacing before the next storm. A cracked shroud leaves the air conditioner's working parts open to sun and weather.

How Do I Know Which RV Air Conditioner Shroud I Need?

Go by the make and model on your air conditioner's label, not by how the old shroud looks or how big it is. Shrouds are built to fit specific air conditioner models, and two that look alike from the ground may not fit the same unit.

The label is on the rooftop unit, under the shroud. If you can't get up there or can't make out the model number, take a photo of the label and bring it in, and we'll help you find the shroud that fits.

Knobs and Interior Hardware

A missing stove knob or a cabinet catch that won't stay closed is a small thing, but you notice it every day. Bring the old piece in, especially on an older unit where the part number has worn off, and we'll see if we can match it.

Common Questions About RV Appliances

How long does an RV water heater last?

There isn't one fixed number. It depends on how often the heater is used and how well it's maintained, including replacing the anode rod on heaters that have one. When the tank itself starts leaking, it's time for a new water heater.

Why won't my RV water heater light?

Start with the simple things: make sure the propane tank isn't empty and the gas valve is open. After a tank is refilled, air in the line can keep the burner from lighting at first. Beyond that, a worn igniter or a failed thermostat is a common cause. If it still won't light, or you smell gas, turn off the propane and have our service department take a look.

Does my water heater need an anode rod?

Only if it has a steel tank. Water heaters with an aluminum tank don't use one. If you're not sure which type you have, a photo of the heater's label will tell us.

Can you install the part I buy?

Yes. Our service department installs parts bought at the counter. Give us a call and we'll set it up.
